Overview
PDF Scan Kit is a document scanner, editor, and PDF toolkit. It turns your camera into a scanner, and lets you merge, split, compress, watermark, password-protect, and annotate PDFs.
Almost everything happens on your device. The sections below cover the few places data leaves it: signing in with Google for backup, AdMob advertising, and Google Play billing for the one-time ad-free purchase — each tied to a specific feature, never running silently in the background.
Camera & documents
The app requests Camera permission to scan pages and ID cards. Photos are processed immediately into a document and are never transmitted anywhere as part of scanning — the resulting PDFs, images, and page edits are saved to the app's private storage on your device.
Page detection, cropping, and enhancement run locally through Google's ML Kit document scanner module. Your photos are not uploaded for this processing.
Documents you import from elsewhere on your device (files, other apps) are handled the same way: stored locally, never uploaded unless you explicitly turn on Google Drive backup (§04).
On-device text recognition
The "Get text" / OCR-to-Word tool reads text out of a scanned page using Google ML Kit's text-recognition model. This runs on-device; page images are not sent to a server to be read. The recognized text is copied to your clipboard or saved as a Word document you choose where to keep.
Google sign-in & Drive backup
Drive backup is off until you turn it on, from Settings → Google Drive backup. Turning it on involves two separate steps:
Signing in
You choose a Google account through Android's system account picker. We receive your name, email address, and profile photo URL from Google, used only to show which account is connected on the backup screen.
Backing up
A second, separate permission grant lets the app read and write files it creates in your Google Drive.
This is Google's most restrictive Drive scope. The app can only see and manage the PDF files it uploads itself — it cannot browse, read, or modify anything else already in your Drive.
When you tap "Backup now," your scanned and imported PDFs are uploaded to that restricted space in your own Google Drive, under your own Google storage quota. Restoring pulls them back down to a new or reinstalled device. No document content passes through our servers — there are none; the app talks directly to Google's Drive API using your account's authorization.
PDF Scan Kit's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Advertising
Every tool in the app is free to use — nothing is locked behind a purchase. The app is paid for by ads served through Google AdMob: a banner on a few screens, and an interstitial after finishing Protect/Watermark/Annotation.
AdMob may collect device and advertising identifiers, coarse location, and ad-interaction data to select and measure ads, under Google's own advertising and privacy terms (not ours). The one-time ad-free purchase (§06) removes every ad in the app.
See Google's advertising policy for what AdMob itself collects.
Purchases & billing
The app sells one thing: a single one-time purchase that removes the ads. It is not a subscription, it does not renew, and it unlocks no features — every tool works without it. It is purchased and processed entirely by Google Play Billing. We never see or store your card number, billing address, or other payment details — Google Play handles the transaction and tells the app only whether the purchase succeeded, so it can switch the ads off.
Anyone who bought the earlier Pro subscription (quarterly or yearly) keeps their ad-free experience for as long as that subscription stays active; it is no longer sold to new users.
Storage & retention
| What | Where it lives | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Scanned & imported documents | App-private storage, on your device | Until you delete them in-app |
| Drive backups (opt-in) | Your own Google Drive, drive.file scope | Until you delete them from Drive or the app, or revoke access |
| Google account display info | Local app preferences only | Until you sign out |
| Ad-free purchase status | Local app preferences; re-checked against Play on launch | Until app data is cleared (restorable from Play anytime) |
We do not run our own servers, databases, or analytics/crash-reporting collection for this app — there is nowhere else your documents could go.
Your choices
- Delete a document anytime from its menu — this removes it from the device immediately.
- Turn off Drive backup from Settings, or tap "Sign out" on the backup screen to clear the app's local record of your account.
- Revoke Drive access fully at myaccount.google.com/permissions — signing out in-app clears local state but doesn't revoke the server-side grant, since Google's newer authorization API has no in-app revoke call.
- Reset the camera permission anytime from Android Settings → Apps → PDF Scan Kit → Permissions.
- Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored documents and preferences; anything already backed up stays in your Google Drive until you delete it there.
Children's privacy
PDF Scan Kit is a general-audience productivity tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us (§12) and we'll remove it.
Security
Documents stay in the app's private, sandboxed storage, inaccessible to other apps. PDF Protect lets you add a password to a file yourself. Network calls to Google (sign-in, Drive, ads, billing) use Google's own encrypted, authenticated APIs.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or why, we'll update the effective date above and, for material changes, note it in the app's release notes.
